Philip johnson houston9/26/2023 Hines hired New York-based John Burgee Architects with Philip Johnson to design the building, in association with Houston-based Morris-Aubry Architects (now known as Morris Architects). It has been referred to as the "Empire State Building of the south". The Williams Tower is the tallest building in Houston outside of Downtown Houston, and is the tallest skyscraper in the United States outside of a city's central business district. The tower is among Houston's most visible buildings as the 4th-tallest in Texas, and the 44th-tallest in the United States. Construction began in August 1981, and the building was opened in 1983. The building was designed by New York-based John Burgee Architects with Philip Johnson in association with Houston-based Morris-Aubry Architects (now known as Morris Architects). Lots are metered or require parking passes on weekdays and Saturday. Otherwise, metered parking is $1 per hour (3 hour maximum) payable by cash or credit card at the kiosk in the parking lot. Please select “parking pass” at ticket checkout to have parking pass included in your order. Parking passes which allow for all-day parking in metered lots can be purchased for $4.00 at checkout. Parking is available in a municipal metered lot on Park Street, approximately 5 minutes walk from the Visitor Center. – Parking is NOT available at the Visitor Center. – Tours are taken to and from the site in a shuttle from the Visitor Center. – All tours of the Glass House originate from the Visitor Center + Design Store at 199 Elm Street, New Canaan CT, 06840. – Advance reservations are highly recommended as tours often sell out. The last tour of the day in November and December departs at 2:30 pm. – Please note the last tour of the day departs for the site at 3:45pm (Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday) and 3:00pm (Sunday) from April through October. In the event of rain, please bring umbrellas, rain coats, etc. – Please check ticket availability prior to your visit. The Glass House is open for the 2023 tour season! We look forward to your visit.
